  • Possible Fisher

    Date: May 14, 2026 at 9:00 pm

Location: Running across Clay St in Huntsburg

    Wildlife Seen: 1 Fisher

    Behavior Observed:

Running across Clay St in Huntsburg. We thought it was a cat at first, but then realized the body was not a cat’s.

    Naturalist's Response

Thanks for reporting a possible fisher.
Fishers are about the size of a very large house cat, up to about 15 lbs. They have very long bodies (like 3 feet) and are dark brown, sometimes dark reddish brown. They live in forested areas.
Only a few have been sighted in Ohio recently, but the sightings have been in our part of the state. It would be great if it were a fisher that you saw, but without a good picture, there’s no way to know for sure.
Here’s is a copy of a Facebook post from the Ohio Division of Wildlife on March 12, 2023:
NEWS: Biologists Find Potential Evidence of Reproduction of Fishers in Ohio
⭐ Our agency confirmed that a female fisher, a mammal that was collected as roadkill in Ashtabula County in February 2023, was pregnant. Although that fisher did not successfully give birth, the results are a sign that fishers are colonizing Ohio.
